How to Plant and Grow Organic Garlic

Garlic is a popular ingredient in many cuisines worldwide, and it’s easy to see why – it’s delicious.

While you can find garlic at your local grocery store, there’s nothing quite like the taste of freshly grown organic garlic. Plus, growing your own garlic is really easy to do.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to plant and grow organic garlic.

  1. Choose a sunny spot in your garden that has well-drained soil. Loosen the soil with a spade or hoe to a depth of 8-10 inches.
  2. Add some compost or well-rotted manure to the soil. This will help give your garlic plants a boost of nutrients.
  3. Separate the cloves from the bulb of garlic. You can do this by gently pressing down on the bulb with the heel of your hand. Be careful not to damage the cloves.
  4. Plant the cloves 4-6 inches apart and 1-2 inches deep, pointed side up. Cover lightly with soil and water well.
  5. Mulch around the plants with straw, hay, or shredded leaves to help retain moisture and keep down weeds.
  6. Water regularly, especially during dry spells.

Your garlic plants will be ready to harvest when the leaves start to turn brown and die back. This usually happens in late summer or early fall.
